Whistler Blackcomb named a top 'green' employer

Company recognized for energy conservation, waste reduction

Whistler Blackcomb has been named one of Canada's greenest employers for the third year in a row.

The editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers project have ranked Whistler Blackcomb among the country's most environmentally conscious corporations.

"We are thrilled and honoured to accept this award," Dave Brownlie, president and chief operating officer at Whistler Blackcomb, said in the news release. "Whistler Blackcomb has been working hard to reduce our environmental footprint for a number of years, recognizing the importance of long term environmental stewardship."

Whistler Blackcomb was recognized for three conservation projects in particular that it said represented over 1.3 million kilowatt hours (kWh) in electricity savings, enough to power 74 homes in British Columbia for one year, according to the news release.

The projects were a behavioural program in partnership with BC Hydro to reduce energy use in all on-mountain buildings; a Continuous Optimization program at the Roundhouse in partnership with energy consultants aimed at saving seven per cent of energy; and an "efficient lighting" project in the company's staff housing.

Also cited in the news release was the Fitzsimmons Creek run-of-river project, a joint venture between Innergex and Ledcor that has the ability to generate 33 GWh of electricity every year. Whistler Blackcomb has supported the project and its ability to generate for BC Hydro transmission enough electricity to power all of the company's lifts, mountain restaurants and snowmaking.

Whistler Blackcomb has the ultimate goal of a "zero operating footprint" and hopes to reach this goal through energy conservation and waste reduction.
