Pemberton male convicting for shooting bear

32-year-old faces $3,000 fine, must forfeit crossbow

A 32-year-old Pemberton male has been convicted for shooting a bear with a crossbow.

Alexis Joseph Laferriere was fined $3,000 for two counts under the Wildlife Act in Pemberton Provincial Court.

The incident occurred on August 21, 2010. The RCMP got a call from a resident who said a bear was dying in their backyard. The investigation revealed the bear had been shot and killed by an arrow from a crossbow of a neighbouring resident. The investigation led to the seizure of a crossbow at the scene.

The RCMP later transferred the file to the Conservation Officer Service for follow up investigation.

The individual was fined $2,500 for hunting without consideration for the lives, safety or property of others and $500 for hunting out of season. The male was also ordered to forfeit his crossbow.
