RCMP stop vehicle with dead bears

Driver charged with unlawful possession of dead wildlife

The Whistler RCMP received a complaint on Sunday, Aug. 28 that a vehicle was travelling down the highway with a dead bear strapped to the roof. The RCMP stopped the van at Whistler Cay and determined that the vehicle had two bears on the outside, both of which the driver said were road kill from the north part of the province.

The Conservation Officer Service attended and the driver of the vehicle was charged with unlawful possession of dead wildlife. There's no word on what the Lower Mainland men intended to do with the animals, which were taken by the conservation officers and placed in the woods.

The Conservation Officer Service has been busy recently, mainly in Squamish where two cougars recently teamed up to kill a Squamish family's cat off of Tantalus road. Cougar signs have been posted on Squamish trailheads for more than a month after several run-ins with the animals.

However, the officers did attend a few bear calls in Whistler this week and used non-lethal techniques like bear bangers and rubber bullets to haze bears that were breaking into garbage cans.
