Squamish has three people running for mayor in 2011 election, 23 running for council, and six running for school board. Below you will find a little information about each one and a way to find out more about their campaigns.

Not all the candidates have provided information at this time so check back regularly as this page will be updated over the coming days.

First elected to Squamish Council in 2008 and plans to retire from his job as the Scotiabank manager in Squamish if he is elected mayor.

 

Auli Parvianen

Former Whistler resident working as a public relations consultant.

 

 

Council

Eric Andersen

Born in Squamish and working as a forestry and transportation consultant. He's thrown his hat in to the ring out of frustration over land-use planning issues and economic strategy. He is a communications and research consultant. Andersen has served on various district working groups, task forces and committees, including the Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee.

An avid climber, though a surveyor by trade. He worked on the Sea to Sky highway improvement project and has lived in Squamish for over 10 years.

 

Balvinder Biring

Forester working with the Ministry of Forest, Land and Natural Resources . Has lived in Squamish for nine years. The father of one says job creation is a top priority along with transportation issues. Biring has been involved with municipal committees throughout his time in Squamish, including the Forestry and Industrial Land Strategy Advisory Committee. Biring also volunteers his time with various organizations - the Squamish Rotary Club, coaching a Squamish Youth Soccer team and coordinating the Squamish Punjabi School.

 

Sarah Braebrook

Platform is "Ability, Integrity and Public Service." Lived in Squamish for 18 years, serving on the board of the Castlerock Family Housing, Howe Sound Womens' Centre, and the Squamish library. Also member of the Chamber. Worked in financial management with banking institutions and has a degree from UBC in political science. She is working on a Master's in Business administration. Currently an Independent Financial Advisor.

Jeff Cooke

Entrepreneur, business owner and avid mountain bike rider. His vision is to bring greater prosperity to the community. His focus in on building the economy over the next 12 months, by helping business grow, attracting new businesses, attracting new self-employed residents and investing in the outdoor recreation brand that is Squamish. He owns the largest dog training company in Canada which he started in 2003. He has an MBA from the U of T in 1989.

Former Squamish Credit Union manager elected to council in 2005.A semi retired accountant he ahs been serving on the Squamish Oceanfront Development Corp, a project that would be a top priority if elected. Economic development is a top priority. He moved to Squamish in 1989 and is a father of three.

Stuntman, actor, producer, writer and director. He was Arnold Schwarzenegger's stunt double on 14 films. Married father of two. Passionate about the arts, children's education, local health care, emergency service provision, creating local jobs, marketing Squamish and building business locally.

Experienced candidate and long time Squamish resident says she is disappointed with the Official Community Plan. This will be her ninth run for council. She has volunteered at the Howe Sound Womens' Centre the Squamish Estuary Conservation Society, the Sea to Sky Community Services Society and the Squamish Estuary Management Plan Public Involvement Working Group.

Former Interfor mill manager and former operations manager with the RMOW now working in the marine industry. His goals, should he be elected, are to retire the Oceanfront Development Corporation and turn the land into a port model, revisit staff duties to ensure efficiency, set specific goals and time limits for development and permitting processes to attract quality developers.

 

Chris Wallace

First time candidate. Studies psychology. Moved to corridor in 1991 to work in golf industry and works at Big Sky as general manager. Married with three kids. Economic development is priority.

 

Rob Weys

First time candidate who works in the auto glass industry as part owner of Haymack Autogalss. Moved to Squamish more than a decade ago. Father to three sons. Priorities include economy and transit system, including commuter bus to Whistler.

Owner of BP Communications and concerned about bullying issues in schools after her son suffered physical abuse at school.
