Profile Questions

What do you see as the top election issues? The top election issues include fiscal responsibility at the RMOW, increasing tourist visits and providing value to residents and guests.

How would you address the budget shortfall? The new Council needs to work together to review different opportunities that will benefit the community and provide funds. Council must review the staff positions, policies and work procedures to determine where potential savings can be made. The budget needs to be reduced in an attempt to curb increases in spending and projects; programs and procedures need to be reviewed to ensure the efficient use of time and money. Raising taxes to fund shortfalls is not the way to move forward.

The potential for single-family home volumetric survey could also add money to the municipal coffers by allowing owners to register to have non-conforming space reviewed and brought into compliance with codes. This would mean tax increases to those that legitimize their space and provide value to the owner when selling.

What do you think is the RMOW's role in boosting tourism? Utilizing the services provided by Tourism Whistler, the Chamber of Commerce along with the input of our intelligent hotel, restaurant and marketing people we should be able to instill more value to our guests while they are here. Good utilization of RMI monies through this group will also prove a benefit. Once guests experience value-added items for little to no cost, they will pass the word to their friends that Whistler is good value and word-of-mouth and marketing plans in place will get the word out. Sending people home with the feeling they received good value for the money will result in a greater desire to come here.

What would you do to enhance the environment for business? A sign needs to put up at muni hall that reads, "Now Open For Business." Council and the RMOW staff need to review new proposals and give them the time and merit they deserve. Opportunity will pass right by if we are not careful. Process at the hall must be completed in a timely and responsive manner so work can be accomplished and not bogged down in paperwork and bureaucracy. There needs to be common sense with decision making to ensure long-term growth and health in the business environment.

Give an example of a difficult situation you have overcome: Working in the strata management business gives me opportunities to overcome situations every day. By working with the parties openly and respectfully I am able to obtain and disseminate information and then to give back an answer worthy of the concern. Specific to this would be the myriad of roof leaks that occur each season. Dealing with the owner, contractors, insurers and guests I am able to provide each with a feeling that the damage and subsequent repair will take place in a smooth transition. While this is not always the course, I must work with all parties to give each a feeling that their concerns are being dealt with and that the project is moving forward to an acceptable conclusion.

Where can people go to get your election platform? Come and speak with me at open events to discuss the town's ideas and concerns. Facebook: Brian Reid for Council.
