The RCMP were still following tips on Tuesday while the friends and family of missing Whistler DJ Mike Grefner were organizing a ground search along the train tracks, on backroads around Function Junction and along trails.
Nothing has been found to explain the 34-year-old's disappearance. One tip said he was spotted in Edson, Alberta, with an unidentified woman, though police have ruled that out; another report puts him in Pemberton. Others insist that these scenarios are unlike Grefner, who had limited funds and would never have missed his DJ shift on the night of Jan. 18.
Friends say that Grefner was out with friends at Garfinkel's Nightclub Monday night, Jan. 16. At around 1 a.m. Grefner showed up in a cab at a friend's home but the friend was asleep. Her roommate said that Grefner was intoxicated, "mentioned losing his wallet," and returned to the cab.
Police have identified the cab driver and have verified that Grefner arrived at his home in the Rainbow neighbourhood at around 2 a.m. Grefner made several calls and texts to friends.
Since then his phone has been turned off and cannot be tracked. He was reported missing on Jan. 19 after he didn't show up for his shift at Maxx Fish nightclub on Jan. 18. Sergeant Shawn LeMay of the Whistler RCMP said that police have used dogs to search the area near Grefner's residence in the Rainbow subdivision. They're now looking for help in identifying the owner of a white Jeep that was idling in the area between 8:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Bear Paw Way on the evening of Jan. 18 as a possible witness. The RCMP received a dozen tips so far.
Foul play has not been ruled out, but it's not suspected at this time. Grefner was last seen wearing faded jeans with white crosses stitched on the back pockets, a navy blue t-shirt and black military-style hat. He is described as a Caucasian male, 34 years of age, 6'2" with a slim build. He has short curly brown hair, green eyes, an olive complexion and is clean-shaven.
