For 20 years the Canadian Home Builders Association of B.C. has been recognizing design and innovation in home construction through its annual Georgie Awards. Over the years several Whistler builders have received awards for multi-million dollar luxury homes, but this year the awards recognized a more affordable kind of Whistler property with RDC Fine Homes winning two awards — both for employee housing projects at Rainbow.

The first award was for "Best Single Family Detached Home up to 2,000 square feet over $350,000." Build on Read Alley, the resident-restricted home includes a number of environmental features ranging from insulated wall board to a solar hot water system that doubles as a shade over the living room window during the hottest part of the afternoon.

RDC also received an award for Best Kitchen under $40,000 for another home on Read Alley.

RDC now has six Georgies to its credit, going back to 2007, and has been recognized as a finalist on six other occasions.

Bob Deeks of RDC said it's the first time to his knowledge that a resident-restricted home in Whistler has won a Georgie award.

"Over the last three or four years we've really changed our business model from high-end, luxury homes to focus more on the affordable side," said Deeks. "We still do high-end luxury, but while expanding our business we've taken on the affordable side of the industry."

Deeks said that his company was involved in the architecture, engineering and interior design of the single family home. "It's pretty cool to win an award where we owned the project from top to bottom, because it really takes a great team to win one of those awards, starting with a great design."

RDC is involved in more affordable market housing projects from North Vancouver to Pemberton. In each case, Deeks said they've taken what they've learned from working in the luxury home market. "We've taken those lessons down to an affordable scale to create affordable, stunning projects."

No other Whistler projects were nominated for Georgie Awards this year.
