The Conservation Officer Service in Squamish asking residents to keep an eye out for a cougar after a big cat was spotted Saturday (March 17) near Mamquam Elementary School.
Sergeant Peter Busink with the Conservation Officer Service said the single report of the cougar prompted the posting of warning signs to alert the residents of the area.
"It looks like a curious cat and it has not displayed any aggressive behaviour at this point," said Busink. "All we were really wanting to do was let people know there are cougars in the area and there is one that has piqued our interest."
Busink said the cougar was spotted on the east side of Government Road north of the Mamquam River.
Busink said he spoke with the person who spotted the cougar and determined the cat didn't show any aggressive behaviour. If the cougar continues to hang around populated areas he said his office wants to know the cat's movements, so he is encouraging residents to call the provincial government's wildlife reporting line.
