A 15-year-old boy from Squamish, who died after being struck by a taxi while riding his bike Saturday night, has been identified as Dean McCall.

"He suffered severe head injuries from the crash and was taken to Squamish General Hospital, then airlifted to Children's Hospital (in Vancouver), where he unfortunately died as a result of his injuries on Sunday, April 22 at 2:30pm,"" said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Peter Thiessen.

The 49-year-old taxi driver stayed at the scene after the accident and is cooperating with the RCMP investigation. Speed, distracted driving or alcohol do not appear to be factors in this crash, said Thiessen. Road conditions were very dark, but good. A mechanical inspection is being completed on the taxi.

"We have spoken to Dean's family, and though they are grieving, they want to reach out to other young people," said Thiessen.

"Dean's family wants youths and their parents to understand just how dangerous it is to ride along the highway at night. Using reflective gear, lights and a helmet and making sure to be aware of your surroundings, is essential to staying safe."

Squamish RCMP notes that the town has a large biking community, with few serious incidents such as this. A bike lane does exist along Highway 99 ensuring safer travel for cyclists when used.

The teen was hit about 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 99 and Mamquam Road. Grief counselling is being organized at the teen's school through the RCMP.
