The Whistler Golf Club's new bent grass greens were installed in a marathon five-day session in mid-April, cut in the middle of the night at the nursery in Abbotsford and trucked to Whistler for installation the next day.

All 18 greens were replaced as part of the renovation at a significant cost. However, after 30 years the renovation was overdue.

"We've made other improvements but the greens have never been resurfaced," explained Alan Kristmanson, director of golf.

"The biggest challenge in this climate is getting the greens to bounce back with snow and ice on them all winter, and bent grass gives extra protection. It's also a superior putting surface and the playability will improve, but the biggest goal was to get the greens open a little earlier. And after 25 to 30 years you want to resurface anyway."

The greens will take a few weeks to establish roots, so initially will be covered with tarps to keep them warm. Opening day has tentatively been set for Friday, May 18.

The driving range opened on April 20.
