This past weekend was the Saunders Subaru Victoria Triathlon, which offered half iron, Olympic and sprint distance categories.

In half iron — 1.9km swim, 86km bike and 20km run — Zoe Dawson of Squamish placed 31st overall and first out of 10 athletes in the female 25 to 29 category with her time of 4:55:49. She was also the third female overall.

Richard Avedon-Savage of Squamish was eighth in men's 35 to 39 in 4:59:20.

Edgar Mujica of Squamish was fourth in the men's 24 and under group in 5:38:21.

Whistler's Sarah Allen raced in the Wine Capital of Canada Triathlon in Oliver, where she was fourth in the 30 to 34 sprint race — 750 metre swim, 20km bike and 5km run — in 1:48:08.

Emma Stevens wins first "Spirit of Sarah" Scholarship

Numerous tributes to fallen freeskier Sarah Burke have been announced since her death in January, but even with the top trophy in freeskiing named in her honour and her posthumous induction in the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the sense is that it could never be enough; there's no easy way to sum up the contributions that the 29-year-old Squamish resident made for her sport, or the impact she had on the people around her.

At Momentum Camps, where Burke had been coming for 14 seasons — first as a skier and later as a coach — the goal has been to keep Burke's spirit and story alive, because, in the words of Momentum founder John Smart, "it's just too good not to tell it."

This week they announced the recipient of the first annual "Spirit of Sarah" scholarship, a free entry into the camp for the girl they felt best exemplified Burke's spirit.

That girl is Emma Stevens, a 16-year-old skier from Brookfield, Nova Scotia.

"It's a great honour for me to have this opportunity," she said. "Sarah was such a huge influence for our sport and overcame so much to help other girls have a smoother road to success. I may not have personally met Sarah, but she has been my idol in every way since I started freestyle skiing. When I think about striving for greatness, I think about being as good as her. Seeing her go for her dreams no matter what and rising above every obstacle she encountered was inspirational."

Smart said it was a tough decision, but in the end "it was clear how much (Emma) was influenced by (Burke's) positive approach, drive and courage, and how much she admired the role she played in promoting women's sport."

Stevens will take part in "Girls Week," which runs July 6 to 14. Camps kick off on June 22, with glacier skiing opening for the summer season June 23.

BC Bike Race donates $2,500 to WORCA

One thing you can't have enough of for a seven-day epic mountain bike race that covers seven different regions is volunteers.

This week the BC Bike Race announced that they would be contributing $2,500 to the Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association for their assistance over the years in finding volunteers.

Speaking of which, the BC Bike Race is looking for volunteers to help out with the final stage of the race in Whistler on Saturday, July 7.

Volunteers are required to attend a meeting at the Whistler Brewhouse on June 26 at 7 p.m. to go over positions and duties. That meeting includes dinner and refreshments, as well as a gift certificate to the Brewhouse. As well, all volunteers will earn race swag (t-shirt, coffee mug and chance to win draw prizes), food and refreshments for helping out on race day.
