Pemberton's railway station, the future hub of downtown revitalization of the village, has received $44,964 from the federal government.
Mark Strahl, the MP for Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon, made the announcement from the station on Frontier Street. The funding was part of Ottawa's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.
"I am happy to be here to announce some good news for Pemberton," Strahl said. "This is the type of project that the government envisioned when we introduced that program."
The funds will cover 47 per cent of the cost of converting the station by upgrading the interior of the facility, including new paint, LED lighting and renovated washrooms. The money will also go towards the construction of a bus pullout, benches, bicycle racks, an information kiosk and landscaping.
"It's always nice to see people come and visit us, especially when they bring some money with them," joked Pemberton's mayor, Jordan Sturdy.
"This initiative has been part of our plans for the past four or five years, in terms of a downtown enhancement program. We started by acquiring this building just under a year ago."
The former BC Rail train station was purchased by the Village of Pemberton for $285,000 in Feb. 2012.
