BOUT TIME Princess Slayah (Star on helmet) gets around a Siren at the Whistler Conference Centre on April 18.

Whistler's Black Diamond Betties roller derby team made an impressive home debut during the World Ski and Snowboard Festival, winning a sold-out bout against the Squamish Sea to Sky Sirens in the Whistler Conference Centre. The team trailed for most of the game, but came out strong in the last few minutes to scratch out its first ever victory.

The Betties are hoping to keep the momentum rolling on Saturday, June 1 as it plays host to the Haney Hooligans from Pitt Meadows. The teams will play in the arena at Meadow Park Sports Centre, with the ice removed for annual maintenance.

"It was a wonderful experience," said Betties' team captain Princess Slayah (a.k.a. Lori O'Hare) of the team's first win in April. "Many of our rookies skated in a bout for the first time and we were extremely pleased with the turnout. We couldn't have been happier to be on the receiving end of so much community support."

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the bout getting underway at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and can be purchased from team members, at the Whistler Brewing Co. or at Hempire. At the door, tickets are $15.

DJ Foxy Moron will be playing the event, and fans are encouraged to dress up to support the home team. There will be a prize for the best-dressed fan. As well, a beer garden will be available.

After the bout there will be team party at Merlin's at 10:30 p.m. in support of the team. Admission is by donation, and DJ Foxy Moron will once again be providing the entertainment.
