Manuel Osborne-Paradis came incredibly close to the podium during the World Cup downhill at Beaver Creek, Colo., on Friday, Dec. 6, finishing fourth by a handful of hundredths.

After starting fifth, the Whistler Mountain Ski Club product hung on to a podium position until reigning world champion Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway set the winning time, pushing Osborne-Paradis out of the top three. Austria's Hannes Reichelt was the runner-up and Italy's Peter Fill was third, while Osborne-Paradis finished just .04 seconds behind Fill.

The 29-year-old's previous best finish in a downhill at Beaver Creek came during the 2008-09 season, when he was 23rd.

It was the second time in as many seasons that Osborne-Paradis has finished one spot off of a World Cup podium, as he placed fourth by only one-hundredth of a second in last winter's downhill at Kvitfjell, Norway.

Fellow Canadian Jan Hudec finished seventh on Friday and Erik Guay placed 16th. Whistler's Conrad Pridy crashed into netting at Beaver Creek, and his status wasn't immediately available. Other Canadians in the field Friday were Jeffrey Frisch (40th), Ben Thomsen (46th) and Dustin Cook, who did not finish.

Racing continues Saturday, Dec. 7 from Beaver Creek with a World Cup super-G.
