Whistler artist Vanessa Stark's painting "Love Lights the World" is up for silent auction by the Whistler Arts Council (WAC).
The painting shows a mother polar bear standing protectively and lovingly over her two cubs. It is on display in the foyer of Millennium Place, which is also where people can place their bids.
"It's a warm, fuzzy thing. When I was a kid, really little, probably five, I had a plaque on my wall with beautiful chipmunks snuggled in bed and it was 'Love Lights the World' and it came from that. When I painted it I wanted to go for that same sort of feeling," Stark says.
The silent auction will raise funds for the arts council and bids of over $250 are being accepted for the painting, valued at $600, until Dec. 28.
Whistler Children's Chorus and Singers hold 30th Christmas Eve concert
The Whistler Children's Chorus and Whistler Singers will bring joy to the world at their 30th annual Christmas Eve concert on Tuesday, Dec. 24.
This interdenominational celebration features traditional carols, choral music sung by the choirs and readings by community members telling the story of the birth of Christ. Come and enjoy the sense of community and "peace and goodwill toward all" that this carol service creates.
This event is by donation. All proceeds go towards continuing to be able to provide this community service.
It takes place at the Westin Resort and Spa at 6:30 p.m. Carols will include "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "Silent Night," "We Three Kings of Orient," "O Come All Ye Faithful," "The First Noel," "Angels We Have Heard On High" and "Joy to the Word."
BC Arts Council launches artist development pilot
The BC Arts Council has launched a pilot program to develop the talents of young artists and arts administrators across the province.
The Early Career Development Program targets emerging artists and practitioners and is open to both individual artists and organizations. The aim is to support their ability to work while building their portfolio and career experience.
The pilot is open to visual artists, musicians, theatre practitioners, literary, media arts, dance, community-based arts, museums and curatorial practitioners.
Individuals can apply for internships, residencies or mentorship components, and must be under the age or 30 with less than five years professional experience since the completion of basic training in their discipline.

WFF Film Fanatic scores gold passes to 2014 festival
The Whistler Film Festival (WFF) has handed out a Film Fanatic award to the fan who came forward with the highest number of features viewed at this year's festival.
The WFF asked fans on its Facebook page how many screening they went to at the 13th annual festival earlier in December and Adrian Charlie saw 25 feature films.
The festival rewarded him for his support with two gold passes to WFF 2014.
