Chris Nelson is the new deputy fire chief for the Whistler Fire Rescue Service (WFRS).

"Chris brings with him extensive knowledge and background in firefighting operations and organizational leadership," said Norm McPhail, RMOW general manager of corporate and community services in announcing the appointment.

Nelson is currently serving as captain with the WFRS. He began his career as a volunteer firefighter in 1989 and was hired as a career firefighter/inspector in 1991. He was later promoted to the position of assistant fire chief in 2004.

"In 2006, Chris saw the opportunity to return to the floor as a shift officer and has been instrumental in the development of the captain's position ever since," said fire chief Sheila Kirkwood, who took on the role last month.

"Deputy Fire Chief Nelson will have a very demanding position on the WFRS senior management team.

"I am pleased to welcome Chris back to the fire service management team as we work to continue to deliver a high level of fire and rescue services to the resort community."

Nelson assumed the position of deputy fire chief effective January 14, 2014. Historically, there were two assistant fire chief positions in Whistler, but now there is one deputy fire chief position.

The deputy fire chief reports to the fire chief, and in the absence of the fire chief, assumes all the roles and responsibilities of the fire chief. The deputy fire chief is also responsible for evaluating emergency operations, acts as the incident commander at emergencies, manages personnel and divisions, and ensures compliance with health and safety legislation and any other duties determined by the fire chief.
