Shoulder season sees jump in room nights

Group visits and meetings up in May over last year

So-called spring shoulder season shrugged off any lulls in business this year with May room nights up 14 per cent over last year.

June is on par with June 2013, keeping in mind that last June was the busiest on record.

The May/June shoulder season has paved the way for a busy summer in Whistler.

"We're pleased with May's results," said Tourism Whistler's president and CEO Barrett Fisher. "The group and meetings business is a significant driver at that time of year."

She noted too that May brought a lot of sunshine and good weather. That, as always, was also a contributing factor.

"You would see some increases from a leisure perspective as well mostly from the regional markets and weekend business," said Fisher. "We did start to see an up-kick in some of the Ironman athletes starting to train in the May/June periods."

And while it's still fledging, the inaugural GO Festival also played a role over the May long weekend.

"All of the excitement and animation that goes on in Whistler, and the positive word of mouth that comes out of that ends up being a positive influence in future years," said Fisher. "Just seeing the continued support for these two months is very encouraging."
