The victim of a death at a Whistler hotel that's being investigated as a potential homicide has been identified as 45-year-old Damon William Campbell.
The Port Coquitlam man was found unresponsive following an altercation at the at about 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the Aava Hotel, where CPR was administered. He was then transported from the scene to the Whistler Health Care Centre, but could not be resuscitated.
Police have not said whether a suspect is in custody, although Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) spokesperson Sgt. Stephanie Ashton said last week "a number of people" have been interviewed by police in relation to the incident.
The BC Coroners Service, the IHIT and the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which is called in for any officer-related instance of death, continue to investigate.
"What we’re trying to do now is establish whether there’s a relationship between the man’s death and an officer’s actions," said IIO spokesperson Kellie Kilpatrick, who would not provide any details on the officer's actions. "If there isn’t a relationship, we will not sustain jurisdiction and will release everything to IHIT, and we’re still in the process of sorting that out."
Kilpatrick added that she doesn't expect any further details to be released for at least two weeks, when a toxicology report is finalized.
