Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) retained its grasp on the U16 menÕs Whistler Cup bronze in super-G.

A year after Max Kirshenblatt claimed it, Kyle Alexander kept it in local hands on Friday.

Representing British Columbia, Alexander's time of one minute, 10.32 seconds (1:10.32) was 0.36 seconds behind winner Mikkel Solbakken of Norway. Fellow Norwegian Markus Fossland placed second.

Knowing what he was up against in the top youth skiers from 26 countries, Alexander wasn't anticipating a podium, but was thrilled to find himself there.

"I wasn't expecting to do that well. It just kind of came together," he said. "When I crossed the finish line and found myself in third, I wasn't expecting to be there. It was exciting."

Griffen Copp, Jamie Casselman, Justin Vittecoq and Zach Mayne all hit the top 10 wearing the Canadian maple leaf, while Albertan Liam Wallace was 10th.

In the ladies' event, Katie Fleckenstein of the WMSC placed fifth with a 1:14.08 showing, exactly a second off the podium and 1.14 seconds behind winner Emma Aaseboe of Norway. Australian Maddison Hoffman was second, just a hundredth of a second ahead of third place Canadian Samantha Boughner from Toronto. Catherine Dufresne was the only other Canadian in the top 10, placing eighth.

In the U14 men's dual slalom, WMSC's Nathan Romanin posted the top showing, placing fourth behind winner Diego Holscher of Chile. Shunosuke Takada of Japan and Nicolas Pirozzi of Chile hit the podium. Caandians Moro Bamber, Zach Temertzoglou, Jesse Holland, Liam Applegath, Sean McCulloch, Felix Boivin, Adam Matejko and Gerrit Van Soest all placed.

On the ladies' side, Lake Louise's Avery Lebsack was third, while Olivia Carrier (Quebec), Daisy Taylor (Toronto), Emily Whitecross (BC), and locals Maja Woolley, Arabella Ng and Gigi Kranjc all placed. New Zealand's Alice Robinson won and Hungary's Szonja Hozmann was second.

Racing continues Saturday with giant slalom for the women and slalom for the men.
