A Surrey man faces numerous charges after allegedly assaulting his wife and attempting to resist police in the aftermath.

RCMP was notified by a village hotel of an alleged assault involving the man and his common-law wife after 4 a.m. on Sunday, April 5.

"The suspect had hit her in the face and grabbed her cell phone as she was trying to phone police in relation to the domestic dispute," explained Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair.

After arriving on the scene, police determined the man was in breach of his court-imposed conditions related to an earlier incident, including not to be in contact with the victim and to avoid consuming alcohol.

The 35-year-old suspect allegedly shoved an officer who was attempting to arrest him and fled on foot. Police caught up with him a short distance away and managed to subdue him after administering pepper spray.
