Summer at The Point Artists-Run Centre is about music, art... and more food.

"It's a way of inviting the community down and experiencing the beautiful site through the lens of the arts. It has evolved, but we've always had the live music, the café and a new art show each summer," says executive director Stephen Vogler.

The key summer event, Saturdays at the Point, were the first scheduled after the centre opened in 2011, he says.

This summer there are a few changes, with more dedicated workshops, including a funk workshop with musician Papa Josh for all levels and instruments opening the season on Saturday, July 4. It runs from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and costs $25.

This will be followed on July 11 by an open mic Creative Café hosted by Aude Ray, which was successfully launched earlier this year. The live set will start at 4 p.m. and open mic begins at 6 p.m.

Other Saturday events will be announced as the summer progresses.

As well, there is also an ongoing art project running over the summer, conceived by ceramic artist and painter Kathleen Tennock.

"We're going to make a big lantern for the lantern boat procession that takes place at the Flag Stop Festival (Aug. 7 and 8). People can add panels each Saturday," Vogler says.

This year, Saturdays at the Point will run from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., a little later than in the past.

"People will be able to come for late lunch or dinner, and drinks will be available, too. It is an après atmosphere. After you do your Saturday afternoon whatever in Whistler, you can chill out and enjoy some art with us," Vogler adds.

The menu has been put together by chef Michele Bush. Called "Around the World in 10 Saturdays with Bushwoman," it will offer lunches and dinners from Southeast Asia, China, the Mediterranean and Mexico.

"We've changed it up in terms of the food offerings," Vogler says.

Meanwhile, musicians Bryan Potvin and Kevin Kane are performing at The Point on Monday, July 13.

Kane, guitarist and vocalist with The Grapes of Wrath, and Potvin, guitarist and vocalist with The Northern Pikes, come with similar Canadiana rock backgrounds, established in the mid-80s and into the 90s.

The duo performed a sold-out show at The Point in December and they were happy to make a return visit.

"It was really a great show," says Vogler.

"They were coming out west again and have recorded some material together. They loved it here so much and so I said sure, let's do it again."
