It’s easy to be inspired by nature when the surroundings are as beautiful as they are in Whistler.

But turning that inspiration into action is another thing altogether, which is why The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment (AWARE) and a number of other local non-profits are hosting an event on Aug. 30 aimed at achieving just that.

Crafty By Nature, to be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Rebagliati Park, will feature “an array of activities designed to connect residents and visitors alike with our natural world,” according to an AWARE release.

Among the festivities on offer will be cooking demonstrations focused on low-impact, plant-based meals; live music from local artists; bird- and bee-house building; nature-inspired jewelry; games and more.

The event will also offer attendees the chance to meet with local groups and learn about our natural environment. Hear about the region’s grizzly bear population from the Coast to Cascades Grizzly Bear Initiatives; the life cycle of food with Earthsave Whistler and the Freed Food Society and local flora and fauna with the Whistler Naturalists and Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council.

“Crafty By Nature was hugely successful last year, and promises to engage and inspire us once again,” wrote AWARE founding member and current Green Party federal candidate for the Sea to Sky, Ken Melamed, in a release. “By coming together to celebrate the wonders of our natural world, and the myriad actions that are underway, we will build the coalitions necessary to ensure a better future.”

Thirteen non-profit organizations and 26 businesses participated in the 2014 edition of Crafty by Nature, which was attended by over 700 people.

Admission is free, with individual activities by donation.
