Whistler DJ and academic Tobias C. Van Veen is "throwing down some words" on DJ and electronic dance music culture at a day of panels hosted by California State University, Northridge, on Monday, March 28.
"I write a lot about DJ and remix culture, and about race and technology. This talk in Los Angeles will be interesting," he says.
The panel discussion at Groove is in the Heart: Researching Dance Music Cultures will bring together a lineup of scholars who are also musicians and DJs.
"All of us come out of electronic music scenes or new age music scenes from the '80s even, and out of DJ and remix culture in general," Van Veen says.
"It's pretty exciting for me."
His most recent project in Whistler was a series of four informal radiant collective nights for music at the Loka Yoga Studio in Creekside.
"There is a long history in electronic music culture in creating collectives to make events and settings for electronic music, because a lot of the time in club culture, it has a particular kind of vibe and social expectations. But electronic music really transcends that, you can create events that are far more conceptual and engage people in different ways," he says.
Dates for GO Fest announced
There are more forms of entertainment, including concerts, outdoor art demonstrations and film screenings as part of the 2016 Great Outdoors Festival (GO Fest), coming to Whistler on the May long weekend, from May 20 to 23.
Now in its third year, GO Fest attendees will also get the chance to try a long list of outdoor activities including recreation clinics on stand-up paddle boarding, running, fly fishing and sailing.
Live concerts take place at the GO Fest main stage in Village Square, with performers to be announced at a later date.
The Whistler Film Festival is again sponsoring its Adventure Film Series at the Maury Young Arts Centre, screening the best independent adventure films all weekend.

Film festival seeks screenwriters
The Whistler Film Festival has launched a call for entries for the 2016 WFF Praxis Screenwriters Lab.
Up to six Canadian writers will be selected to take part in the lab, a joint feature script development program in screenwriting.
Phase 1 will take place over five days from June 5 to 9 and include four months of ongoing feedback.
Phase 2 includes a four-day follow-up, pitch boot camp and scheduled market meeting from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3 during the Whistler Film Festival and Summit.
