Combining art and wellness is Michelle Yamamoto's aim. She brought her Brave Art for Youth program to Grade 7 students at Myrtle Philip Community School on Monday, June 20.
"I created the program to address a need I feel youth have now — to have tools to cultivate inner wellbeing and at the same time take their art to the next level," Yamamoto says.
The class starts with contemplation and discussion about different ways of healthy living, such as mindfulness.
"It's useful to understand how to manage yourself when you're angry and not put that anger onto other people and to know when someone is doing that to you and to not take that anger in like a sponge," she says.
Yamamoto also is offering the course through Arts Whistler at the Maury Young Arts Centre on Saturday, June 25.

Pemby Fest day tickets on sale
Single day tickets are now on sale at the Pemberton Music Festival — and the day lineups have been announced.
A one-day general admission ticket is $169, while a one-day VIP ticket costs $344. Both tickets include shuttle passes.
Full weekend general admission tickets are still available at $315.
Snoop Dogg headlines on Thursday, July 14; J. Cole headlines Friday, July 15; The Killers headlines Saturday, July 16, and Pearl Jam closes the festival on Sunday, July 17.
Pemberton Festival performances at Whistler Olympic Plaza on Wednesday, July 13, are due to be announced next week.

Audain philanthropy talk postponed
The Audain Art Gallery's panel discussion, The Art of Philanthropy, Collecting and Museum Building, has been postponed to Aug. 25 at 7 p.m.
The panel includes Michael Audain, the chair of the board of directors of the Audain Art Museum, Bob Rennie, principal of the Rennie Collection at Wing Sang, and Darrin Martens, chief curator of the Audain.
The panel is free with the price of admission to the museum.

Rainbow Medicine Retreats at SLCC
The Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre is bringing in wellness camps and retreats to run on a monthly basis.
Run by Rainbow Medicine Retreats, each three-day camp offers different activities and healing focuses.
The first is Journey Back to Self from June 26 to 28, which includes yoga, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and a war canoe paddle; followed by Freedom to Flow from July 25 to 27, which includes yoga, SUP, hiking, mountain biking and sailing.
