A number of upgrades are planned for the Sea to Sky Highway this summer and fall, totaling $5.4 million worth of investments from the provincial government, according to a Ministry of Transportation press release.
The biggest chunk — $4 million — is allotted to the ongoing asphalt resurfacing happening between Whistler and Pemberton.
In Whistler, $150,000 will be allotted to extend the right turn acceleration lane at Lorimer Road, while another $500,000 will be used to build a left turn lane on Highway 99 at the Whistler Heliport. Construction on both is slated for September.
Other investments include $525,000 for a digital overhead message sign at Alice Lake, $70,000 for a speed-reader board and curve warning signs in Lions Bay and $100,000 for a cycling warning system in the Porteau Bluffs section of Highway 99.
"These highway upgrades will help improve safety and mobility for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians along this iconic and increasingly busy stretch of the Sea to Sky," West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Jordan Sturdy said in the release.
"The investments in resurfacing, access improvements, new overhead digital message sign, and a cycling warning system will all contribute to our goals of enhancing year-round safe and efficient travel along Highway 99."
