What's in a name, you ask? Well, eternal glory for one, and maybe even a pass to Meadow Park, too, if you're lucky.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is asking the public for help naming two neighbourhood parks in Rainbow. The contest is open to all Whistler residents except RMOW employees. Entries will be reviewed by RMOW staff and the Recreation and Leisure Advisory Committee before approval by mayor and council. The winners will be announced at the May 9 meeting of council at the Maury Young Arts Centre.

If you're wondering what makes a good name for a park, the RMOW offered some helpful advice to entrants:

☻ Potential names could include neighbourhood references, such as streets, nearby geographic features, community features, nature, heritage and people.

☻ Avoid name duplicates, since similar or identical names in different locations cause confusion. Name duplicates will only be considered if they help with wayfinding, such as Balsam Park on Balsam Street.

☻ Make sure names are short and easy to pronounce. Long names need to be considered in terms of potential abbreviate nicknames and convenience of use.

☻ Keep names relevant to Whistler and reflective of the type, scale and scope of park character and amenities.

Park A is located between Crazy Canuck Drive and Bear Paw Trail, while Park B is close-by between Highway 99 and Bear Paw Trail.

The deadline is March 31 at midnight. Submit your name suggestions at www.whistler.ca/rainbow-neighbourhood-parks-naming-nomination-process for a chance to win a one-month pass to the Meadow Park Sports Centre.
