Support workers at the Whistler RCMP detachment have voted to unionize.

At an Aug. 3 labour board vote, the employees, who provide clerical support, victim services and custodial guard services to the RCMP, chose to become members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 2010.

“We are very happy to welcome this department into our local,” said CUPE 2010 VP Pete Rozsa in a release. “They will now have a collective bargaining agreement which is a legal contract between the employer and the employees, instead of a handbook that has been used as a guideline.”

Rozsa added that the 18 new members will now have “provisions for job security and binding language in their contract to deal with grievances.”

CUPE 2010 already represents around 60 Resort Municipality of Whistler employees, as well as outdoor workers at the Village of Pemberton.
