Crews from the BC Wildfire Service have a forest fire that ignited near Squamish this weekend 75-per-cent contained, according to a Tuesday afternoon release.
The fire broke out Sunday along the Mamquam Forest Service Road, approximately 13 kilometres east of Squamish. At press time, the blaze sits at roughly three hectares in size, and is ranked 1 to 2 on BC Wildfire's six-point scale, indicating "smouldering ground fire and low vigour surface fire." The public is advised to avoid the area.
Over a dozen firefighters, an excavator and three helicopters have been deployed to combat the blaze.
Although the fire sits outside of the district boundary, Squamish Fire Rescue is "being kept apprised of the situation."
Closer to home, the fire danger rating in Whistler remains at extreme. Campfires are banned, and some construction activities are restricted.
