Update: The highway has re-opened.
An avalanche has closed Highway 99 in both directions north of Pemberton, reports DriveBC.
The slide, which took place last evening, shut down the major roadway from Mount Currie to Lillooet. Ministry of Transportation officials are currently assessing the impact and removing debris. DriveBC is reporting that the highway is estimated to re-open to single-lane alternating traffic at 6 p.m.
There is no threat to public safety, said Ryan Wainwright, emergency manager for the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District.
The avalanche was likely due to a melting snowpack caused by a recent spell of warm weather, he added. “Lots of snow and changes in temperature create instability up high, and whoosh!” he explained.
