The United Kingdom’s Groove Allegiance is a partnership that contributes something unique to the breakbeat world.
Jonny Strinati flexes his talents on the decks while Chris Hughes plugs away at the guitar to recreate what they call P-Funk beats with grainy synthesizers and trademark guitar edits, and they are coming to Whistler for Soul Kitchen Sundays on Sunday, Oct. 7 at Tommy Africa’s.
“These guys are huge in the breaks scene,” said Soul Kitchen organizer Lindsay Phillips.
“Most of the DJs in town play their records, so the DJs will know who they are... These guys are exactly what I try to promote music-wise for Soul Kitchen Sundays.”
Soul Kitchen Sundays unearths turntable talent from at home and abroad for what has become a locals’ favourite dance night.
Groove Allegiance will dish out plenty of beats to get the party humming. The Brits have performed worldwide, including appearances at London’s Fabric, San Francisco’s Mighty Breaks and Beijing’s Cargo.
The studio boys, who first stormed the scene with Hunkle My Funkle/System 100, gained international acclaim and airplay on Annie Nightingale’s BBC Radio 1 show.
They co-founded the label, Splank!, which was nominated for Best Breakthrough Label of 2006 and then Sixth Best Label of 2007 at Breakspoll.
The producing crew are currently working on their 20th release with an artist lineup of Darftphunk, Moston and Malente, Strider, Myagi, Phonat and, of course, themselves.
The duo just finished mixing The Shirk Off, an album compilation of everything Spank!.
Their remixing talents are always in demand, including work with Circuit Break’s Viperjive and Angus Robinson’s Moneyshot. And Groove Allegiance’s B-Phreak Break Ya Self remix was featured on Sony Playstation’s recently released Wipeout 2 game.
