Teachers and administrators are working out what the report card situation is going to look like in the Sea to Sky corridor this spring.
Superintendent of Schools, Lisa McCullough, said this week that she is meeting with the teachers' union leadership after Deputy Minister of Education James Gorman directed school district superintendents to ensure spring and final report cards are issued.
"Different districts are interpreting that directive differently," said McCullough in between meetings on Tuesday, April 10. "Some are issuing formal report cards as usual and some are doing versions of progress reports for the spring and a final report in June."
McCullough is discussing the various options for spring reporting in School District 48 schools between Squamish and D'Arcy.
"What our spring report cards look like here will be a conversation I have with the teachers' association over the different options we have," said McCullough. "In some cases we have teachers that have provided much better reporting than a formal report... so we are looking at options and what teachers have already sent home. In some cases it's outstanding and we'd like to let that stand as the report."
Beth Miller, the B.C. Teachers' Federation (BCTF) representative in School District 48, said last week that the teachers in this district remain frustrated and there's no appetite to make up work impacted by the teachers' job action earlier this year.
"This really would be rubbing salt in the wound," Miller said of any demand on teachers to prepare formal spring report cards.
McCullough didn't offer a timeline for the discussion. She said the conversation would happen "very soon" with the teachers.
"Our high schools already had report cards due so they are going out as usual given that they were already coming up on the timeline starting this week," said McCullough.
No matter what happens with the spring report card issue the top administrator in the school district said formal report cards would be issued at the end of the school year for all students.
While the teachers and administrators sort out the spring reporting issue teachers have indicated they will meet with parents to review student progress and discuss how individual students are doing with their schoolwork.
