Ever thought of adoption? How about a book?

The Friends of the Whistler Library are making it possible through the Adopt a Book program, which takes place at the Whistler Public Library on Dec. 3, 4 and 5 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The idea is that people "adopt" a book or magazine on behalf of themselves or someone else by purchasing either a book or a subscription. The Friends of the Library will then place a label on every magazine issue or inside the book jacket to indicate the donor. Cards will be provided to notify the person that a gift has been purchased for the library in their name.

Jane Reid, a volunteer with Friends of the Whistler Library, said the program could make for some great Christmas gifts.

"We last promoted it maybe five years ago," she said. "So we're going to do it again and bring it to the public's attention with the possibility of someone adopting a magazine subscription. We're hoping to make this available every year around the same time so people can count on it as a gift possibility."

It's a gift possibility, Reid said, because it isn't necessarily purchasing a personal item for someone else.

"It helps the local library and benefits anyone who reads that book or anyone who reads that magazine," she said. "I think a lot of people are veering away from more things and they're, you know, looking for more meaningful gifts."

Anyone interested in taking part in the program can go to the Whistler Library during the times posted above and approach a table that has been specifically set aside for book and magazine adoption.
