Adult mentors sought in Pemberton

The local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency is looking for adult mentors to recruit for their in-school program at Signal Hill elementary school in Pemberton.

Big Brothers Big Sisters are seeking positive role models to mentor a student who may require encouragement and would benefit from some one-on-one time with a caring adult. The goal of the program is to contribute positively to the development of a child.

"This program can help improve a child’s interaction with other children, their self-image, increase their interest in attending school and their involvement in school programs," said program co-ordinator Kim Shellborn.

Activities take place on the school grounds and can include shooting hoops on the basketball court, playing board games or working on an art project.

The agency is seeking volunteers to dedicate one hour a week during the school year from early October 2003 to June 2004, excluding school holidays.

They are also requesting the support of Pemberton valley employers to make allowances for their employees if they participate in the program, as it coincides with the regular work day.

The adult mentors don’t need experience with children but do need to be able to demonstrate honesty and respect for others.

Once applicants have been screened for acceptance into the program, an orientation will be provided. Shellborn said that the agency is looking for at least six people to offer their assistance.

This is the second year that the program has been in operation at Signal Hill Elementary.

"Last year the volunteers found the program really rewarding and they enjoyed spending time with the kids, they said they gained a lot from participating and want to do it again this year," said Shellborn.
