RCMP on the Sea to Sky Highway and 27 other routes across the province will be targeting aggressive driving over the summer and fall. Attorney General Ujjal Dosanjh announced this week that more police will be enforcing traffic laws on the province’s 28 corridors where the risk of collision is highest. Officers will use laser or radar to enforce speed limits and also use laser to target tailgaters following vehicles too closely. In the 16 corridors where the enhanced enforcement started in mid-April, including Lions Bay to Pemberton, there were more than 7,600 charges or warnings during the first two weeks. The program will be in force on the Sea to Sky Highway until December. The corridor speed enforcement program began as a pilot project on the Sea to Sky Highway in 1995. during the 1997 program, there were 58,000 charges and written warnings. Across the province, the 1998 program will involve more than 100,000 hours of regular traffic enforcement on the 28 corridors, and an additional 50,000 hours of overtime paid for by ICBC. The enhance police enforcement will be supplemented by a public awareness campaign using advertising and community activities to show drivers the dangers of aggressive driving.
