Alpenglow tournament to light up Whistler skies

The Whistler Frostbite Ultimate Team, an 18-member travelling team that draws players from Whistler’s six-team league, is hosting their annual Alpenglow tournament this weekend.

It’s a month earlier than usual, but according to Frostbite player Dan Wilson, it was necessary to give the team time to prepare for the nationals in Edmonton next month.

"We qualified and we’re going," said Wilson. "It was nice when they were in Vancouver, but we qualified for a spot this year and we’re going."

Nine teams are expected to turn out to Alpenglow, including teams from Nelson, Vernon, and Vancouver. It’s co-ed play, with a mix of ‘A’ and ‘B’ division teams and players.

The Whistler team has traditionally been successful against ‘B’ division teams, and in the past they’ve given ‘A’ division teams a run for their money. They won three games and lost three close ones at the nationals last year, moving up from 16 th to 10 th in the co-ed rankings.

The Alpenglow Tournament will run on July 14 and 15, starting 9 a.m., on the lower fields at Myrtle Philip Community Centre.
