Angels right here on earth

Christian youth group unites talents to raise money for Uganda orphans and X-Life

What: The Rock and Roll Angel Show

Where: MY Millennium Place

When: Saturday, Jan. 28, 3 and 7 p.m.

Tickets: $10

Thirty-two Whistler youth want to make a difference in the world and they are doing so both locally and globally with the Rock and Roll Angel Show Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3 and 7 p.m. at MY Millennium Place.

Proceeds will provide seed money for the Village of Hope, an orphanage in Uganda, as well as fund a local Christian youth group called X-Life, which provides healthy activities and Christian teachings for Whistler youth.

"I think it gives them global awareness," said event organizer Carmen Traub of the youth’s involvement in the show. "I showed a video of the kids (in Africa). Some of them cried and got really upset about the injustice. They wanted to pray and send clothes to the kids. If they learn this value now, the more likely they will be world changers when they get older. By putting on the show, it makes them feel empowered that they can do something."

The matinee and evening show includes live bands, solo singers, short-drama scenes and dance, including hip hop and break dancing choreographed by Soul Funktion Dance Studio instructors.

The entertainment touches on themes of anti-drug, suicide, depression, anorexia and bullying issues, along with Christian values and social justice.

"(The numbers) encourage teens to stand up against vices," Traub said. "We want kids to be aware of the various pitfalls they can fall into. It gives hands-on practical ways to overcome them as well as the message of God’s love."

The youth come into contact with the show’s message of values and God’s love every Saturday night at the X-Life Youth Group meeting hosted by the Traub family. What started out as a quiet evening of maybe four kids has now grown to an interchanging group of 47 youths. Partial proceeds from the night will contribute to the $4,800 budget it costs to run the group.

The Rock and Roll Angel Show also includes a silent auction from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10. To get involved in X-Life, visit www.x-life.ca, www.x-life.caor call Traub at
