Animal party at Moe Joe’s

Tuesday, Moe Joe's

By Nicole Fitzgerald

Who: Animal Nation

Where: Moe Joe’s

When: Tuesday, March 20

Get ready for a “beary” good hip hop show this Tuesday, March 20 at Moe Joe’s with wordplay wizards Animal Nation and friends rocking out a zoo of a fundraiser for the Get Bear Smart Society.

“We wanted to do something to get the community together and bears have really been an issue this year,” said Mike “One-Arm-itage” Armitage of Animal Nation.

The local hip hoppers are famously known around these parts for their stuffed tiger and panda costumes. Donning paws and snouts, these music animals thought it was time they give back to other furry types — the Whistler black bear.

The Get Bear Smart Society aims to reduce the number of human-bear conflicts that occur each year in Whistler through education, programs and studies.

Proceeds from the community event will benefit the local, non-profit organization.

The evening includes a live show from Animal Nation along with an opening show from Vancouver Island’s Character Traits. Great prizes to be won, including a five-day edge card from Whistler-Blackcomb as well as snowmobile tours, bungee jumping, zip trekking, gift certificates from restaurants and local shops, and much more.

“Everybody we’ve talked to about the event has been really supportive,” he said, singling out sponsors Circa, Russel Brewery and snowboard.com.

It’s amazing the local duo had time to organize such an event with Armitage and fellow hip hopper Steige “Tall Man” Turner hard at work on a new album set for release this spring on the Rallytime Records label.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s coming along,” Armitage said. “We’ve been so busy recording; we haven’t had time for much else.”

Right now the two are focused on raising funds for a great cause with plans for a West Coast tour in the spring to promote the new album.

Tickets to join the party zoo are $8.
