At Nesters Market there will be a booth where you can pick up a free seedling and talk to municipal experts on how to plant and care for a tree.
AWARE, the Whistler Naturalists and the RMOW are continuing their work on the north gravel pit in the Emerald Forest, planting more trees and native species of shrubs. Last summer’s drought took their toll on the trees that were planted in past years, as did the resident vole population that has chewed through the stems of many trees.
This year groups will be planting species that are more resistant to drought and appear to be doing better in the remediated soil of the gravel pit.
In addition to planting, volunteers will be placing protective cones around the trees to protect them from the local rodent population.
Meet at the gravel pit at 9 a.m. if you want to take part. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring a shovel and work gloves.
While work continues on the north gravel pit the Whistler Rotary Club will be continuing its work planting trees and shrubs along the River of Golden Dreams this year.
The booth and planting projects will wrap up after noon, followed by a barbecue at 1 p.m. at the Edgewater Lodge and Outdoor Centre, located opposite the Alpine Meadows subdivision on the same road as the high school. The barbecue and other events are open to the everyone.
