Re: “Letters to the Editor for the week of March 21

To all the folks who are having trouble with season passes:

Dispute the charge for the pass with your credit card company. This is the only way that businesses will properly address a customer concern because it effects their bottom line. When they stand to lose money they tend to pay attention.

Re: “The cost of climate change

There is no discernible trend in any extreme weather related data for North America. Cycles yes, upward trends no. What is on an upward trend is mass media reporting and insurance payouts. Population growth and density has increased dramatically in areas impacted by severe weather, ergo reporting and insurance payouts climb when an extreme weather events hits. Heck even Whistler's population increased by 21% from 2011 to 2016. A hurricane hitting a lightly populated Florida 60 or 70 years ago did far less damage than one does today and there was no rolling news coverage either!

Re: “Tourism Whistler halts marketing in China amid rising tensions

This September Chinese tourists surged to third on the visitor number rankings behind the US and UK. They are definitely smaller in numbers but spend far more per capita, on average about $2400 each per trip. Canada has a lot to lose with a decrease in visitors from China, the same cannot be said for the inverse of this. So it is likely that China exerted diplomatic pressure on Canada to remove in-country promotion while the Meng case proceeds. For Canadian tourist authorities to declare they withdrew promotion voluntarily is laughable at best, especially as Trudeau declared 2018 'Canada-China Year of Tourism'.

Re: “Meet Emma

Why does a day ticket cost $178?

Why did Vail discontinue the Parent and Spring Skiing passes?

Why did Vail gut the Edge Card program pushing skiers towards their Epic Pass?

Why do I have to pay for an Epic Pass in US dollars?

Why can I no longer buy a season pass or Edge card after the start of the season?

Why can I no longer bulk reload my Edge Card but instead now pay the inflated variable window rate with a minor discount?

Re: “Whistler Blackcomb saw lower-than-expected visitation over holiday period

Maybe $178 day tickets, a gutted Edge Card program and $600/night 3-star hotel rooms have something to do with it. The general consensus amongst my peers in Vancouver is that Whistler is now an overpriced, busy tourist trap. Vail could regret turning their noses up at locals who used to stay overnight and would be classed as 'destination guests'.

When the US economy sneezes Canada catches a cold. So when cross-border traffic cyclically declines in the future they'll be once again clambering for my local dollar as WB Inc. was in 2009-2014. But maybe it's too late I've heard that Big White had one of its busiest Decembers, so much for Katz's BS excuses.

Finally @Jay, don't complain about the traffic if you're part of the problem. There are plenty of affordable public transport options to Whistler. Maybe use your energy campaigning for an express rail service on the completely underutilized rails that bisect Whistler instead. We don't need more cars on the road.

Re: “Letters to the Editor for the week of February 1

Hey Overlord, there is a speed limit, it's like rule number one of the code. "Always stay in control. You must be able to stop and avoid other people or objects"

Simple physics come into play here. If you are travelling so fast that you cannot remain in control or cannot avoid other people or objects then you have exceeded your SPEED LIMIT.

Re: “December room nights drop 5% in 2017

"do not call on Dec. 25 to make a booking for New Year's Eve, call on Nov. 14" Mwahahahhaha, if you want to book a room over Christmas think more like August or September unless you want to pay at least $800 for a pokey room in a three star hotel.

Whistler is turning into a joke, $9 beers, $15 sandwiches...
