Arrests down despite influx of weekend visitors

Underager slipping into bars though

Despite rainy weather visitors descended on Whistler for the Victoria Day long weekend and most had a great time.

And while there was the expected rowdy behaviour, arrests were down again this year.

In all 18 people were arrested – down from 21 last year and 33 in 2004.

Whistler Pemberton RCMP responded to 98 calls for service – also down from last year’s 121 calls for help.

There were several outbreaks of violent behaviour including a group of males who when asked to leave a hotel lobby went to their vehicle and returned with a hockey stick and a baton then got into an argument with the employee. The RCMP seized the hockey stick.

In another incident a male was refused access to a municipal bus on Village Gate Boulevard and became so upset he kicked out a bus stop window. The male fled the scene and his identity is still unknown.

The Whistler bike patrol also seized two large metal pipes from the inside of a vehicle driven by a group of youths in Sundial Crescent.

In all a total of 13 people were arrested for being drunk in a public place. They were all held in the Whistler RCMP’s cell until they were sober and released.

Also arrested were a man for uttering threats against his estranged wife, a male for the sexual assault of a female, and three males for credit card fraud. The RCMP also investigated nine drug possession files.

Police and the Liquor Inspection Branch are also investigating the discovery of 12 underage people inside various bars on Sunday night.

The Whistler Pemberton RCMP services were bolstered with officers from other Lower Mainland detachments, Sea to Sky Traffic Services and from the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team.
