Volunteers needed for a Whistler institution Whistler has more than its share of festivals and events, many of which come and go, but few could be called an institution. One that does qualify for that title is the annual Whistler Children’s Art Festival, which returns to Myrtle Philip school May 29-30 for the 17th edition. The festival is a mix of morning workshops followed by performances from internationally-recognized clowns, dancers and artists. In the first years most of the artists leading the workshops were from the Lower Mainland. Over time, however, local artists became involved and they now teach the majority of workshops. Originally a modest festival intended to bring art and culture to local school children, the Whistler Children’s Art Festival has grown in size and scope. Among other things, that means more help is needed, which leads to another Whistler institution: volunteers. Organizers of this year’s festival are looking for 170 people willing to help out. Duties range from baking goodies the week before the festival to helping out with workshops to assisting with set up and tear down of the festival. Commitments can be as little as three hours.
