Whistler's annual 10-day end-of-winter party, also known as the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival (TWSSF), starts in just seven weeks and organizers are busy looking for a plethora of talented artists to take part in a range of artistic events on the schedule for this year's festival.

Organizers of the 14th annual TWSSF are now accepting submissions from our own backyard and around the world for the Olympus Pro Photographer Showdown, Designer Search and Expose, the Fashion EXPOSED fashion show, the skate-specific photography exhibit called Skate of the Art, and the 72-Hour Filmmaker Showdown. They're also on the lookout for graphic designers to create snowboard and ski top sheets for Masterpiece in Motion, and creative talent to take part in new arts events like State of the Art, the replacement for BraveArt, the festival's new 10-day art installation. There's also the ThreePointOh Multimedia Challenge, a new media event that morphs film, photography, graphics, sound and sport into a singular creation.

"There's a lot of industry people that are out there, and one of the side effects is this powwow of the senior marketing people for all the brands and resorts, and they're all going to be there," said Lisa Richardson, communications contact for TWSSF. "It's pretty great exposure for someone who's looking to make that next leap."

Pulling the performance together
If you've wandered around the village recently, the aerial dance performance being rehearsed on a massive metal contraption has probably caught your eye.

Aeriosa Dance Society has been preparing for the 2010 performance of Inspired by Place, a new work that has been commissioned by the Whistler Arts Council as part of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad. Since Feb. 16 the dancers and musicians have been testing their aerial, visual and sound concepts on location at Mountain Square. On Thursday, Feb. 26 and Friday, Feb. 27 people can catch their full performance, starting at 7 p.m., free of charge.

A multicultural concert
Musical cultures from around the globe will collide at the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre next week during a spectacular one-time concert performance of L'Arbre de Borobudur.

As part of the Canadian Music Centre's New Music in New Places concert series, one of Canada's leading contemporary music ensembles, Aventa Ensemble, teams up with the Vancouver Community College Gamelan Ensemble, an Indonesian percussion ensemble, and flute player, Mark McGregor, for a unique performance of L'Arbre de Borobudur (The Tree of Borobudur).

The free presentation is being held in Istken Hall at the SLCC on Thursday, March 5 at 2 p.m. The New Music in New Places concert series is designed to bring Canadian contemporary music out of concert halls and into the everyday lives of Canadians. Past venues include underground shafts at the B.C. Mining Museum in Britannia and the Rocky Mountaineer trains.

WAC celebrates 27 years of community art
The Whistler Arts Council has played an integral role in Whistler's vibrant arts scene for almost 27 years now, and to celebrate their accomplishments and contributions, they're holding an anniversary gala that's guaranteed to entertain one and all.

Our Whistler: Celebrating Our History takes place at the Four Seasons Resort Whistler on Friday, March 6. The evening starts with a reception at 6:30 p.m. and a delicious dinner prepared by the Four Seasons' culinary staff at 7:30 p.m., and wraps up with special guests telling their stories from the community.

"Whistler is a unique place full of unique characters," Joan Richoz, Whistler Arts Council Chair, said in a recent press release. "This evening offers an exclusive opportunity to hear firsthand the stories which have shaped our past, present and future."

Bob Daniels, Cathy Jewett, Jim McConkey, Nigel Woods, Tom Thomson and Toulouse (aka Terry Spence) are a few of the locals set to regale guests with their tales.

Tickets are $100, with all proceeds going towards WAC's year-round programming. They can be purchased at www.whistlerartscouncil.com or the WAC office at MY Millennium Place.

Adorn Whistler's streets
The Resort Municipality of Whistler and the Public Art Committee are on the hunt for an artist interested in creating the 2009 summer/autumn street banners. The project would be of particular interest to artists with backgrounds in painting, drawing, printing, photography, design composition or graphic design. The successful applicant will be responsible for the development of a theme, the creation of four designs that illustrate that theme, and the implementation of designs through consultation with a banner production company.

Deadline for submissions is Monday, March 2 at 3 p.m. For more information, visit www.whistler.ca and click on the business link.
