Concert Series takes shape
The Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s DKNY Concert Series is on the move with the announcement of five award-winning bands for the 2006 lineup, which will eventually multiply by 10 by April 14 to become Canada’s largest free outdoor concert, staged right here in Whistler.
Juno-award-winners Default top the list with their platinum-selling music. Rolling Stones opener Metric follows with their fusion of contemporary rock and early-80s new wave beats. Jurassic 5 shakes up the band fare with a six-crew team of MCs and DJs showcasing hip hop via turntable trickery and master beats. Rap is on deck with the Blackalicious experimental alternative rap executed with jazz-heated production. Festival favourites Michael Franti and Spearhead are back to close out the festival’s concert stage with funk-based, social-conscious-message vocal interplay.

Community Now reruns
If local history enthusiasts missed last week’s screening of Community Now: Year Two, a short film dedicated to sharing youths’ stories about Whistler, you can catch it again right in your own living room.
The Whistler Museum and Archives is selling DVDs of the locally produced film for a suggested donation of $10.
Year Two is one of four featurette films being produced, each focusing on a different demographic.
The individual films will be edited into a full-length feature and screened at a special reception held during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
The film can also be viewed in the museum’s Mountain Life Gallery.
Documentary festival
Get an intimate look at the splendor of the Sea to Sky Corridor at the Brackendale Documentary Film Festival’s Films of the Natural World Saturday, March 4 at 8 p.m. at the Brackendale Art Gallery (BAG).
Film highlights include Sean Johnson’s Derelictica (snowboarding), Rick Styles’s Putt Putt (motorcycling trials), Paul Nelsen’s Ashlu Kayak Festival (river kayaking) and the Squamish Windsurfing Society’s The Collective (kite boarding).
Admission is by donation.
