Artists or artists to be can now register for the inaugural Whistler Art Workshops on the Lake, August 14 to 27 at the Chaplainville House.
There will be plenty of inspiration to channel through the various workshops with classes set in a rustic heritage home located on the waterfront of Alta Lake.
Whether a beginner or advanced artist, there are plenty of classes to chose from with instruction in acrylic, oil, watercolour, and drawing, as well as First Nations drum making, drum painting and cedar bark basket weaving.
Instructors include B.C. artists Alan Wylie, Janice Robertson and Alex Fong as well as local artists Sharon Jensen and Isobel MacLaurin. The First Nations workshops will be led by Charlene Leon and Melvin Williams.
Watercolour Painting is hosted Aug. 14 to 15 for $115. Something Shiny, Something New Watercolour is Aug. 16 to 18 for $225. First Nations Drum Making and Painting is Aug. 19 to 20 for $180. First Nations Cedar Bark Basket Weaving is Aug. 20 for $65. (Or you can get a First Nations combined package $225). The Art of Drawing is Aug. 22 for $60. Intermediate/Advanced Oil Painting is Aug. 23 to 24 for $285. Beginner/Intermediate Acrylic Techniques is Aug. 26 to 27 for $160.
All prices are based on early-registration, which closes July 1.

Blue Rodeo slide guitarist visits Whistler
Blue Rodeo fan?
Well Blue Rodeo’s master of lap steel, pedal and slide guitar is coming to Whistler for an intimate performance Tuesday, July 25 at MY Millennium Place.
The music career of Blue Rodeo’s Bob Egan is a long one. Before touring with Blue Rodeo from 1999 to the present, Egan was trying on numerous different bands, but none seemed to fit.
He began in the late 1980s with the roots rock outfit of Souled American, then moved onto Freakwater. Egan then became the pedal steel guitarist for Wilco for two years, where he saw the release of Being There and toured with the group. He also worked with Wilco, along with Billy Bragg and Woody Gutherie, to record the Grammy-nominated Mermaid Avenue collaboration. However, Wilco’s movement to more of a keyboard style left Egan opting for a solo career – which now includes two albums.
He performed with Oh Susanna in exchange for the manufacturing of 1,000 compact discs for his first album. He then ventured overseas to produce alternative country bands in Norway, including Madrugaga. When he returned to Canada and opened for Jim Cuddy, Blue Rodeo spotted his talent and asked Egan to join.
Egan has also performed with the likes of Neko Case, The Sadies, Northern Pikes and John Stirratt.
Australia’s Cass Eager also joins Egan for the evening, opening the concert with roots, soul, folk and blues.

Whistler Farmer’s Market open
Don’t forget to celebrate Father’s Day at the 2006 Whistler Farmers’ Market, which opens this Sunday, June 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Whistler’s Upper Village.
With anywhere from 60 to 80 market vendors involved, there is plenty to check out. Stalls stock everything from organic produce and seasonal berries to baked goods, preserves and breads, all from the Sea to Sky Corridor. The market lives by the mandate "100 per cent, make, bake or grow."
The artisans colourfully add to the market with jewelry, hats, paintings, photography and scarves — basically anything your heart could ever desire, all within the equivalent of a city block.
Live music is also hosted at the market along with different activities including chef demonstrations and a children’s craft area.
The market runs every Sunday until October 8.

Capture Crankworx
Crankworx is putting out a Canada-wide search for Whistler’s newest photography competition – Capture: the Kokanee Crankworx Photographer Challenge.
The top-10 photographers will have their work shown on outdoor screens throughout Whistler for the festival July 22 to 30. The top prize is a $2,000 photography contract to cover the festival and a one-week stay at the Adara Hotel.
Photographers are invited to submit 10 digital action biking shots. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, June 22.
