Art classes lakeside for summer
Three-day workshops help artists dip into a palate of skill and creativity this summer at the second annual Whistler Art Workshops on the Lake June, July and August at the Chaplainville House on Alta Lake.
Workshops cater to all levels and include specialized beginner and intermediate classes.
Everyone is welcome for Jack Reid’s How to Paint Snow, Water and Skies in Watercolour for all levels June 1 to 3 as well as Alan Wylie’s Drawing and Composition workshop July 3 to 5.
Beginners can dip their paint brushes into Beginner Acrylics with painter Janice Robertson July 6 to 8; Beginner Watercolour with Sharon Jensen July 13 to 15; Beginner Oil Painting with Jennifer Angus July 27 to 29; and The Art of Drawing basics with Isobel MacLaurin Aug. 11 to 12.
Intermediate artists can expand their canvases with Expressive Acrylics with Suzanne Northcott Aug. 17 to 19; and Concept to Structure, Developing Stronger Paintings in Acrylics or Oils with Richard McDiarmid Aug. 22 to 24.
Classes range from $140 to $340. Early-bird discounts are offered for all classes. The discount deadline is June 1.

Oscar winner slated for Reel Alternatives
A nail-biting thriller is the next indie flick in line for the Whistler Film Festival’s Reel Alternatives monthly independent film series with The Lives of Others Wednesday, March 21 at 7 and 9:45 p.m. at Village 8 Cinemas.
The Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film follows the tale of a prominent couple in former East Germany and a Stasi (secret police) agent who is spying on them. The film was described as “chillingly recreat(ing) the Kafkaesque nightmare of the Communist state.”
There are only two more Reel Alternative films left to take advantage of with Unnatural & Accidental April 11 and Monkey Warfare April 28.
Tickets are $6.50 for Reel members and $8.50 for non-members.

Artists and venues needed for art tour brochure
The revision of a Whistler self-guided art walking tour brochure provides local artists and businesses with the opportunity to drive visits.
Local studios and commercial art galleries are invited to submit information for the brochure. Inclusion is free for Whistler Arts Council (WAC) members or $35 for non-members to become a member of WAC.
Businesses who display local artists can also participate in the brochure for free, with information such as the business name, telephone number and street address included. The location will also be indicated on a map. Businesses can also invest in a corporate advertisement for $250 if desired.
The 2007 Whistler Art Tour Brochure distributes at least 10,000 brochures a year to sites such as the Chamber Information Centre, Activity Centres, major Whistler hotels, bed and breakfast accommodations, commercial art galleries, MY Millennium Place, Whistler Arts Council, listed businesses, cafes and restaurants, Meadow Park Sports Centre and other outlets.
