Midnight call for illustrators, artists

Artist call for Midnight

Illustrators and artists are invited to submit works centring on the theme of Midnight for the inaugural Visinterpreted Art Slide Show Friday, May 26 at Maxx Fish.

"This project is designed to promote creativity in the art of visual communication," said Jon Parris, event founder and graphic designer. "All mediums are welcome."

The deadline for submissions is May 19.

Sundance Film Fest winner screens in Whistler

Ever wonder why America depends on a state of war?

Why We Fight, winner of the 2005 Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize, offers insight into the anatomy of the American war machine Wednesday, May 3 at 7 and 9:15 p.m. at Village 8 Cinema, part of the Whistler Film Festival’s Reel Alternative Series.

Inspired by Dwight D. Eisenhower’s "military industrial complex" theory, filmmaker Eugene Jarecki flushes out the issue with personal stories and commentary by the who’s who of military insiders.

Tickets are $6.50 for Reel members and $8.50 for non-members. Membership is $4.

Calling all rock musicians

Fame and fortune could be just around the corner for rock bands entering the 2006 Fox Vancouver Seeds Program, an annual local talent competition that awards the top band a prize package with everything they would ever need to get started.

From an 600 to 700 submissions five bands will be chosen to compete, with the winner taking home a $5,000 demo recording deal with Warner Music Canada, a management consultation agreement with Coalition Entertainment (Our Lady Peace, Finger Eleven) and $1,500 in tour support from 99.3 The Fox.

A CD with a minimum of three tracks must be submitted by May 19.

Performers invited to audition

Singers, dancers and performers are invited to audition for Soul Funktion Dance Studio’s annual dance extravaganza Spirit of the Dance June 9-11 at MY Millennium Place.

No professional experience is necessary. Participants must come with a prepared sampling of their talent, whether dancing, singing, fire spinning or juggling. Set dance auditions are available upon request.

Submission call for art awards and bursaries

The Whistler Arts Council is accepting applications for its Art Award and Summer Arts Bursary programs recognizing artistic achievement in visual, literary, performing and media arts demonstrated by elementary and high school graduates in Whistler, Pemberton and Mount Currie.

Art Award issues $500/$100 awards to students and the Art Bursary grants $250 bursaries for students who will attend an art camp this summer.
