Arts festival opens up new world for kids

Dig out the clothes that don’t matter for the Whistler Children's Art Festival this weekend, May 24 and 25 at Myrtle Philip Community School. From painting to mask making, magic and mosaics, the kids can have a crack at hobbies that most adults never get to try.

Even kids with the shortest attention spans should have no trouble enjoying tie-dying tutorials, soap carving classes, bird house building groups, jewelry design school and even a henna tattoo workshop.

Some of the highlights include the Vancouver TheatreSports League who will be on hand with workshops in improv, guaranteed to develop skills in thinking on your feet with theatre games and lots of laughs. A special effects workshop led by film industry artist Katherine Mulvihill will teach kids how to make funny faces using latex and make-up. And another magic workshop by Master Magician and Illusionist John Kaplan has been added for Sunday, May 25 at noon. The Pique’s own star assistant editor Andrew Mitchell will teach the tricks of the trade on news reporting.

The tiny tots are not left out in all this action. The Pre-school Space Station for children aged 3 to 5 will feature alien face painting by Cary Campbell-Lopes. The room will be full of flying saucers, space jam musical creations, space cookies and recycled rockets.

Registration for all workshops can be made on the day of the Festival at Myrtle Philip school, depending on available space. Schedules are posted at www.whistlerartscouncil.com.

Volunteers will still come in handy for workshop assistants, set-up and registration. Call the Arts Council to sign-up at 604-935-8419. The Whistler Children's Art Festival is presented by the Whistler Arts Council and McDonald's Restaurant.
