Crankworx is coming! Crankworx is coming! And this year, the music component is free. The Deraylor componant has been cancelled and in its place are two nights of music from Canadian acts at Whistler Olympic Plaza, including K'naan, Hot Hot Heat, Current Swell and Kostaman.

K'naan will perform from 9 to 10 p.m. on Friday, after Kostaman's 45 minute set at 8 p.m. Hot Hot Heat will play on Saturday night after Current Swell.

The concerts have been paid for by the RMOW through the Festivals, Events and Animation program.

We contacted K'naan's publicist for an interview, but he was unavailable. Oh well. We still like you, K'naan. You can wave your flag here any day.

Art Reception Part Deux

One reception is never enough for something like ArtWalk. There's lots to see and far to walk.

So, the Whistler Arts Council is throwing a second reception this Thursday from 6:30-9 p.m. It will take place from Village Common to Skiers Plaza, featuring live music, street entertainment and live painting by Lauren Ritz, Taka Sudo, Laurel Terlesky, Stan Matwychuk, Vanessa Stark and Liks.

Like last time, there will also be a sketch crawl, arts and crafts and kids' activities.

A reception at Nita Lake Lodge is also planned for Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. to meet Anna Popma, whose work is currently on display at the hotel. There will be live music, followed by a barbeque overlooking the lake.

Celebrate Homebase Studios' birthday

Last year, Homebase Studios in Squamish gave birth to itself. Well actually, visual artist Stan Matwychuk gave birth to it, making a space for visual artists of all types to collaborate and create on new facets of arts and events. It has housed some of the most creative and deliciously weird painters from the Sea to Sky. And now it is one-year old.

To celebrate its birthday, Homebase Studios is throwing a party at, um, Homebase Studios on Sunday, July 17. There will be food, wine, artsy creative tops rubbing shoulders with the less artistically-inclined, sipping nice wine while browsing the silent auction, which will feature art by Homebase collaborators Laurel Terlesky, Chantal Robert, Amber Butler, Vacuum Sucks (a.k.a. Nate Smith) and Matwychuk. Dialated Monkey will play "rooftop soiree music."

The shindig starts at 5 p.m. Everyone's invited!

Arc'teryx photo contest this Thursday

Beloved sport clothing company Arc'teryx is hosting the Steep Shot Photo Shoot Out this Thursday (July 14) at the Howe Sound Brew Pub in Squamish, as part of the Squamish Mountain Festival. There will be stellar slide shows by talented photographers and, of course, tasty beer on tap. And Pique's own Darren Roberts will be judging the competition so, if for no other reason, head on over to see the much revered Mr. Roberts in the flesh.

Tickets are $17 at the door. Show starts at 9 p.m., doors at 7:30 p.m.
