Ashlu power project goes to second public hearing

The Ashlu Creek Independent Power Project will go to a second public hearing as new information has recently come to light.

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District held the first public hearing for Ledcor’s power project in mid-May.

Since then information about grizzly bear habitat and white water kayaking interests have come to their attention, forcing the SLRD to hold another public hearing.

In the meantime SLRD staff is set to prepare a policy framework around IPP projects in the area.

This would identify regional priority streams for IPP development and other streams to remain undeveloped due to environmental attributes, recreation values or significance to the regional communities.

The board decided to consider the Ashlu Creek project out of the context of this regional study because the application has been in the process for a long time.

Board Chair Susan Gimse asked staff to actively solicit all the outstanding issues with the project and bring them back to the board.

Board members are also planning to go on a field trip of the area in the coming weeks.
