The Atomic Series continues with Pro Am Halfpipes on March 9 and 23. The first event, this Sunday, is for skiers only.

It’s a jam format, which means that skiers, divided into three competitive categories, will have 90 minutes to ride the pipe. They will get two judged runs, and the best of two scores will count towards the standings.

Now for the best part: the winner of the ski halfpipe contest will receive an automatic entry into the Salomon Superpipe finals of the Garnier Fructis World Skiing Invitational on April 19.

In addition, all participants will be eligible for prizes from Atomic, Nintendo, Showcase, Glacier Shop, Oakley and Universal Music. For the pro categories in both skiing and snowboarding, there is also more than $7,000 in prize money.

The contest is open to all ages, men and women, pros and amateurs.

To guarantee a spot, register in advance at any Whistler-Blackcomb Ski School Sales location or call 1-800-766-0449. Event day registration is also available until 10 a.m. in the Rendezvous.

All athletes must sign a 2002-03 event waiver. Minors require a waiver signed by a parent or guardian, and bring the waiver with them to registration. The form is available at www.whistler-blackcomb.com/calendar/events/atomichalfpipe.asp .

The awards ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. at 18 Below, and will feature video taken of competitor’s judged runs.

Helmets are mandatory and mouth guards are strongly recommended.

For spectators, training will take place from 9:30 to 10:10 a.m. The contest starts at 10:30 a.m.
